Small Business Owners: Stop Ranting and Start Hustling!

I’ve visited several cities and towns in East Java with my family to visit a couple of relatives. Along the way, I can’t help but notice thriving small businesses. Then it struck me… these businesses are thriving without proper support from the government.

Indeed, in Indonesia, despite the fact that micro lending flourishes, access to credit is limited. We are getting used to do whatever we can with the limited resources and often confusing small business laws. At times, we who are entrepreneurial operate from loopholes to loopholes, walking in the grey area of the road.

So, what’s the point of me telling this story?

It’s related to Obamacare. It’s related to business survivability. It’s related to hustling in the tough economy.

You see, some of my friends in the U.S. and a couple of relatives in Europe are being pessimistic about the economy and how the government is not caring about small businesses.

While I agree that things could do better, I think it’s about time for small business owners to step up and start making a difference – there are always small businesses out there that are hustling and thriving despite the economic situations and lack of economic support.

Instead of ranting, it’s better for small businesses to make the most of the new regulations; instead of complaining, it’s better for small business owners to improve theirs – offer better customer service, better product/service quality and find new ways to be more responsive to changes.

Here’s what you can do RIGHT NOW to start hustling for the win in today’s recession:

1. Do more networking!

“In these dicey economic times networking is even more important than it has ever been because it is a low-cost as well as cost effective marketing tool.” – Bella Rareworld

2. There ARE opportunities in recession

“It is wise to be cautious right now if you own a business. But if you are careful and prudent, there are opportunities to grow your business, even during difficult economic times” – Dr Jeff Cornwall

3. Do the opposite

“In spite of all the obvious negative consequences of a recession, it can also be a good time to expand and develop your business, as many of your competition will probably be doing the complete opposite” – Dave Collins

It’s a worldwide issue, really… small businesses, with limited budgets, open opportunities for employment; with limited support, small businesses are still driving the economy – and hold the key to economic development of local community.

The best thing small business owners can do is to hustle, as many struggle due to the recession and new regulations; while many are hit, cut back everything and rant about the changes days and nights. You should take the opportunity to go the opposite way and establish your share in the market and be the leader in your niche.

Remember what Winston Churchill said about hustling: “A kite flies against the wind, not with it.”

Are you up to the challenge?
